Best Activities for Kids in Washington DC

DC is an incredible place to raise children. Around every turn, it seems, is a place of historic, scientific, or cultural interest.

When your daughter studies dinosaurs in pre-school? Take her to the Natural History Museum. When your son shows an interest in American history? Mount Vernon is just a hop, skip, and a jump away.

Is she thinking about becoming a doctor when she grows up? Call up that friend of a friend who works at NIH for a private tour. Growing up here makes it possible to dream big dreams.

Because we love our city and we love our kids, we want to find them the best activities in Washington DC. But how can you ensure that you are taking them to kid-friendly venues that will be fun and welcoming?

We’ve compiled a list of some great family-friendly places so you can ensure that everyone has a good time.

Awesome Restaurants for Children

Of course, Washington DC is a foodie paradise, but you don’t have to give up those great dining experiences when you have little ones.

Old Ebbitt Grill is a classic, dating back to 1856. If your little one loves politics and talking about the Presidents, she will love this place.

Or is famiglia more your style? Carmine’s selection of pasta, garlic bread, and desserts is sure to please even the pickiest eaters in your family.

Want to introduce your kids to something new? Union Station has an incredible selection of restaurants along with some amazing architecture. You might just try something new yourself!

Activities for the Whole Family

DC has world-class attractions no matter whether you are an indoorsy or outdoorsy family.

For most kids, The National Zoo is a must-do. Admission is free and the grounds are open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Pro-tip: Get there right at 8, especially if there’s a little early-morning nip in the air. The animals will be much more active (and vocal!) than they are in the heat of the day.

The National Air and Space Museum will capture kids’ imaginations whether they dream of flying by plane or rocket. And the companion museum at Udvar-Hazy Center is where the really big hardware hangs out. Your budding astronaut will love seeing the Space Shuttle Discovery up close and personal.

Looking for something fun to do that’s outdoors? There is no place like Rock Creek Park, a true oasis in the middle of the city. With 32 miles of hiking trails, incredible wildlife, Civil War fortifications, colonial homes, horseback riding, boating—there just isn’t room here to list all of the possibilities offered by this incredible place. Oh, I can’t resist just one more—The Rock Creek Park Planetarium. Trust.

Have a little history buff at home? The National Archives is an incredible place to help make history come alive, with copies of the Declaration of Independence, the US Constitution, and the Bill of Rights on display.

Then head over to the National Portrait Gallery to put faces with the names. And if your little history scholar also loves sports, the Babe Ruth display will make for one happy camper.

Have a little one who loves to get all dressed up and go somewhere special? High tea might just be the most memorable way to spend an afternoon. Many DC hotels and restaurants offer this special event. The Ritz-Carlton Pentagon City, The St. Regis, and the very British Henley Park Hotel are just a few. Looking for more tea, less high? Teaism at Dupont has all of the food and tea without all of the frills.

Want a little old-fashioned family fun at the ballpark? Take in a Nationals Game at Nationals Park. Grab a program and teach the kids how to keep score on the grid. Eat dinner at DC classic Ben’s Chili Bowl. Slow down. People watch. Sing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” and really mean it. It could be the beginning of a great family tradition.

Sweets & Treats

Okay, while you’re out running around, you’ve got to stop and get a little sweet treat to keep your energy up, right? Candy? Chocolate Chocolate on Connecticut Avenue. Ice Cream? Milk bar on I Street. Cupcakes? Come on now. Any of these are sure to make the day, and the family, even sweeter.
